I have a male roborovski dwarf hamster for sale. He must not be kept with other roborovski hamsters no matter what you have read online or have been told as they are solitary animals in the wild living in loose colonies which captivity doesn't provide enough space for (as I have learnt). Him and his brother were living peacefully until they weren't so I had to separate them before they injured each other.
A large aquarium would be an ideal enclosure for him as sometimes the bars of normal hamster cages are too wide for them (they're tiny and very cute) and they escape.
As they are a semi-desert/desert species they need to have a bowl of sand in their enclosure to enable them to clean themselves. They really love a sand bath. Reptile desert sand you find at any pet shop is best for this as it contains minimal dust. Another good choice is children's play sand, it must just be sterilised before use. Avoid any products labeled as "chinchilla dust" or chinchilla sand as they are too dusty for roborovski hamsters and can cause respiratory problems.
They love eating millet sprays, other small seeds and dried mealworms scattered around their tank. It enables them to exhibit their natural foraging behaviour.
I wouldn't regard them as the best pets for kids as they are strictly nocturnal, are very fast and won't sit in your hand. They are best suited for people who want to observe and watch rather than hold their pet. They are very entertaining to watch if you are awake late enough to catch them up and about
If you are interested in him please provide a picture of the tank he will be living in, just to ensure he is going to have a good life ahead of him as that's what he deserves :)
